The Distillery History
The luck of the Irish has nothing to do with how good Great Wagon Road’s spirits are. That’s all skill, recipes, and adhering to the proven methods established by distillers that came long before.
Our passion for distilling hails from a long history of whiskey makers who paid the price for us to get to do it freely.
Our main copper still was hand made in Germany utilizing age-old coppersmith techniques in harmony with modern touch screen control systems providing the best of what the old and new world has to offer. We age our spirits in new American white oak barrels, and we don’t touch them until they’re at the peak of their flavor. The result is a smooth well rounded Whiskey with a beautiful color. Peach and Cherry to the nose, rich and smooth with sweet vanilla on the pallet, then lingers with just a touch of spicy heat you’d expect from a fine award winning Whiskey.
Always the purest and as a labor of love, Ollie insists on using water sourced from exceptionally pure artisanal spring water straight off the Blue Ridge Mountains from Yancey Co. North Carolina.
Ollie is known to go up as much as twice a month to retrieve the water from the spring catchment system on his mountain property.
There are two sides to our business; wholesale, The Great Wagon Road Distilling Company which makes all our fine award-winning spirits, and our retail side, The Broken Spoke. While we're actively searching for a new location for the spoke - please know we are still cranking out the good stuff on the distillery side. Stay Tuned!
